Key points from this meeting show that the fire chief is still procuring trucks for the Navarre area and will not have everything in place by July 1, when the new Orono Fire Department takes over the Navarre area. Orono is also not in a position to conduct any rescue or EMT on Lake Minnetonka in this district. They will rely on Long Lake Fire to cover that shortfall.

At this meeting the annual mandatory truth in taxation was on the agenda with a public hearing.  While our tax rates have been steady the amount of money the city has pulled in has increased by 80% since 2017 due to development and rising home values.  In 2017, Orono received $5.2 million and they will receive $9.4 million in 2024.  This 80% increase is far and above any inflationary rate.

At the 1:23 time mark there was a conversation about finalizing the Long Lake on the 2024 fire department budget.  The council was not clear in why they will not approve the budget.  Orono received a generous donation to the Orono Fire Department relief fund of $50,000.  At the 1:55 time mark you will hear the council member comments at the end of the meeting.

  • Here is a quote from our council member Richard Crosby
    • "Crosby said that Erickson (a business owner in Orono) revels in the fact that the crooked Department of Justice is going after the next President of the United States but there is no discussion about Joe Biden who is shoveling money over to the (sic) Ukraine to pay for kickbacks, money that he has laundered out of  the (sic) Ukraine and China and that is all ok.  Crosby said Erickson’s free speech is slander, degradation, put-downs and threats.  He hasn't learned from history because for his profession of hating Nazis, he had turned himself into one, he said.  Instead of having polite discourse he slanders and threatens people.  Free speech is important, the right to assemble is important. Protesting is not necessarily an insurrection Crosby continued."

  • At  this meeting the council voted to spend $2.7 million on fire equipment that will be leased.  As part of the public comments it was brought up that the cost of these funds was not included in the proposal given the lease approach.   Also of note is listening to the council comments at the end of the meeting at the 3:53:20 time mark.  The link is below.  This portion alone is a very good view into who is on the council today.  Next year we will be voting for 3 new council members.  These include mayor (Walsh) and 2 council members (Crosby and Veach).

July 24 Meeting - Note the plan to proceed with spending for design to remodel the current public works building into a fire station (item 11).  The cost for the remodel is estimated at $3.5 million.  

Per a comment from Adam Edwards (Orono city administrator) and the city engineer, the public works building is not ideal for a fire station.  Yet, the council voted to proceed to the next phase of design  at a cost of $295,000.
